Richard W. Lyman, 46 year old historian, was named president of Stanford University in Stanford, California Thursday. He has been acting head of the school since the resignation of Kenneth S. Pitzer last June. Lyman has been vice president and provost of the university since 1967 and played a key role i coping with campus disturbances the past two years.
