Gilbert W. Fitzhugh, executive vice president of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, was named today to become the firm's president and chief executive officer effective at the end of the year. Fitzhugh, 53, succeeds retiring Cecil J. North as head of the world's largest insurance company.
