Shown taking off from San Diego's Lindbergh Field November 23 on its first flight is Convair's XC-99 military transport, largest land plane in the world. The six-engine, double decked sky giant, airborne at 115 mph after a run of only 3,000 feet, cruised over southern California for one hour and two minutes before landing. Piloting the XC-99 were Russell R. Rogers, Chief of Flight Test and Research at Convair's San Diego division, and Beryl A. Erickson, test pilot on B-37 bombers at Convair's Fort Worth, Texas, plant.
